The Daniel Oduber-Quirós International Airport (LIR), better known as Guanacaste Airport, was recognized by the Airports Council International, ACI.
Based in Montreal, Canada, the ACI is a global trade representative of the world's airport authorities. Founded in 1991, the organization represents airports' interests with governments and international organizations.
For the fifth year in a row, ACI awarded LIR as the Best Airport in Latin America and the Caribbean in the category of fewer than two million passengers.
According to the company in charge of managing the airport, VINCI Airports, these are the most important awards in the aeronautical industry and are obtained through the evaluations made by passengers who have arrived or departed from that airport.
Guanacaste Airport also received a second prize as the Easiest Airport Journey in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the world ranking, the airport is among the best positions in terms of quality of service in its categories of region and size. This places Guanacaste airport among others such as the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto Port in Portugal.
Recently the airport has announced some improvements to increase the capacity of operations. This year the expansion works of the landing strip will begin. The works are budgeted at $100 million.
Additionally, the airport inaugurated a new pet zone. Passengers can leave their pets in an 8.5 m² area, which is special so that both dogs and cats can be there during the waiting time for the flight.
The airport also inaugurated a movement-based energy phone charging center. They installed stationary bicycles in the boarding halls where passengers could produce electricity while waiting for their flight.
