To increase the capacity of operations at the Daniel Oduber-Quirós International Airport (LIR), known as Guanacaste airport, this year the expansion works of the landing strip will begin, the Ministry of Public Transports announced.

According to the ministry, the cost of the work is established at $100 million. Half of the cost is covered with funds from the central government, 40% is covered with a budget from the Institute of Tourism and the remaining 10% will be covered with a loan provided by an international bank.

The work, which will be carried out in four phases, is scheduled to conclude in 2025.

In the first phase of the plan, facilities will be built for the collection of waste and the reconstruction of the airport platform. In the second phase, a contingency runway will be built and improvements will be made to the current taxiway. In the third phase, an expansion of runway #7-25 will be built. And in the last phase, the last repair work will be done at the airport.

LIR operates 16 international airlines that offer flights to 20 destinations around the world.

The expansion of the runway is part of some improvements that the airport has announced. This week, passengers can now access the recently inaugurated pet zone.

Last week, the airport inaugurated a movement energy phone charging center. They installed stationary bicycles in the boarding halls where passengers could produce electricity while waiting for their flight.

Another airport that announced improvements was the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province. They added 30 touch-screen kiosks to better facilitate the passenger self-check process.

Records show that during the first half of the year, there have already been over 1.2 million tourists in Costa Rica.

Just last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
