Passengers
at the
Daniel Oduber-Quiros International
Airport (LIR),
known as Guanacaste airport as it is
located in that province, can now
charge their phone batteries while
pedaling at the movement charging
center. The
passenger generates enough energy to
recharge the phone's battery by their
own movement by pedaling on an
exercise bike. When pedaling, the
pedal comes into contact with a pulley
and the rotating alternator will
transform the kinetic energy produced
by the movement of the pedals into
electrical energy. The
airport installed stationary bicycles
in the boarding halls where passengers
could produce electricity while
waiting for their flight. For every
minute of pedaling, an average cell
phone can charge 1% of its battery. In
other words, a person who uses these
charging centers for 30 minutes will
have exercised as if they had ridden
4.5 km on a bicycle.
The charging points, available for both Android and Apple, are located in the east boarding hall and were installed by the company Morpho Travel Experience.
“We are incorporating innovative proposals, in line with the sustainable vision of Costa Rica and, above all, at the level of international competition," Adriana Echandi, CEO of Morpho Travel Experience, said.
According to Echandi, the airport seeks to improve the experience of passengers visiting the airport.
LIR operates 16 international airlines that offer flights to 20 destinations around the world.
Just last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
