The Tourism Institute recorded that in 2022, about 2,350,000 tourists visited the country.
That is one million more visitors than the 1,347,000 tourists who entered in 2021.
However, the number is below the 3,139,000 visitors registered in the country in 2019, the year before the pandemic of the covid-19.
Most of the tourists, 2,117,960, arrived by air, which is equivalent to 90% of the total number of tourists who arrived in the country last year.
The United States continues to be the leading nationality visiting Costa Rica. Authorities documented more than 1,252,400 tourists from the U.S., which is equivalent to 53% of the total number of visitors.
More than 171,000 Canadian tourists visited the country, that is over 121,100 visitors compared to 2021.
Authorities registered more than 410,800 European tourists. Of these, the majority came from the U.K. with more than 70,400 travelers, Germany with over 66,700 tourists, France with more than 59,500 visitors and Spain with over 53,200 travelers among others.
All airlines have restarted their flights to Costa Rica.
Authorities at the Juan Santamarķa International Airport in Alajuela Province recorded almost 1,456,000 tourists entering the country by air. While at the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Guanacaste Province, authorities documented the arrival of more than 661,500 tourists.
The data show that the country made steady progress towards reactivating the tourism sector, which has been one of the hardest industries hit during the pandemic.
The institute has launched many international advertising campaigns encouraging tourism to Costa Rica. Recently, there was an advertising campaign running in the U.S. and the Canadian province of Ontario promoting vacationing in Costa Rica.
How else should the institute boost tourism? We would like to know your thoughts on this story. Send your comments to news@amcostarica.com
