The Texas-headquartered airline, Southwest, launched more flights between the U.S. and Costa Rica, announced the Institute of Tourism.

In March 2023, the airline will offer two additional flights, one on Saturday and Sunday. Both new flights are between George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Texas (IAH) and Juan Santamarķa International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province.

Also that month, there will be two additional flights to Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste Province. One is from the Baltimore Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) and the other is from the Denver International Airport (DEN). The flights will be on Saturdays and Sundays.

LIR airport is also known as Liberia Airport because it is located in the canton of that name in Guanacaste Province.

The airline will also enable another direct flight in March 2023. This is between DEN and SJO. The flight will depart from DEN at 7 a.m. local time and then depart from SJO at 12:30 p.m. local time, also on Saturdays and Sundays.

Southwest opened flights between the United States and Costa Rica in 2015. Additional information about flight schedules can be found on the airline website.

According to statistics from the Institute of Tourism, the United States is the main tourist market for Costa Rica. From January to July, authorities registered 819,548 tourists who arrived in the country by air. They prefer to visit beaches and national parks. Among the main tourist activities, they enjoy learning more about flora and fauna, visiting volcanoes and surfing among other activities.

Southwest is one of many airlines increasing the frequency of their flights to Costa Rica.  Last week, the Swiss airline Edelweiss launched new flights between Zürich and Guanacaste.

Another airline, the Mexican low-cost Volaris launched new flights between Costa Rica and Colombia recently.

Last week, a U.S. citizen was recognized as the 10 millionth passenger to arrive at Guanacaste airport.

As of June, there have been over 1.2 million tourists in Costa Rica.

Last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
