According to VINCI Airports, the company in charge of managing the airport, even though the airport first opened in the 1970s, it wasn't until 2012 when the new termHubbell won the recognition of 10 millionth passenger xxx in the last ten years. The native of the U.S. State of Colorado arrived around 11:15 a.m. m. from Miami International Airport in Florida, aboard American Airlines flight 1377.
The tourist arrived in the country as a guest at a friend's wedding. “This is a super unexpected and very warm welcome," Hubbell said as he entered the country and was greeted with music and folk dancing.
"I am very surprised this is cool. I am here because a friend is going to get married. We all got invited to a really cool resort. I am happy to be part of the trip and happy to be here," he said.
Hubbell said he and his friends plan to go hiking around to see more of the place. "I am sure Costa Rica is very welcoming so far," he added.
Hubbell and the rest of the passengers were greeted with a celebration that included folk music and dancing as well as various gifts such as souvenirs and coffee made in Costa Rica, VINCI said. For Hubbell, the airport gave him two American Airlines tickets to travel back to Guanacaste.
This year, between January and June, about 363,900 passengers arrived at Guanacaste airport. The figure exceeds by more than 135,000 the number of passengers who arrived in 2020, the year in which the covid-19 pandemic began.
The airport has reopened transit of all the airlines that had operations before the pandemic.
So far this year there have been over 1.2 million tourists in Costa Rica.
Last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
