The Tourism Institute promotes Costa Rican flora, fauna and gastronomy at the Eden Project in England.

The Eden Project is a large greenhouse built to encourage the conservation of tropical rainforests on the planet. It is a visitor attraction located in Cornwall County, South West England.

According to Jo Elworthy, Director of the Eden Project, Costa Rica is a country with a forest cover of over 50%. "The British are passionate about conserving the environment and hold it as an ideal," Elworthy said. "Costa Rica is a sanctuary for the mind, body, soul and nature.”

Inside the large greenhouse, a small "lodge" was built with information about the tropical jungle of Costa Rica.

Visitors received information about Costa Rican flora and fauna as well as enjoyed free samples of chocolate made with cocoa beans produced in Costa Rica.

At the opening of the Tico lodge, British chef Adam Handling, owner of the Ugly Butterfly restaurant, offered British food inspired by Cornwall and Costa Rica. The dinner included cocktails and snacks, mixing British and Tico ingredients such as pork rinds, ceviche (a seafood dish), and chorreada (a traditional pancake prepared with corn) among other recipes.

“The goal of this activity is to promote Costa Rica in the United Kingdom as a world leader in conservation and sustainability, a destination to reconnect with nature, aimed at travelers who are aware of caring for the environment”, Ireth Rodríguez, institute advertising department chief, said.

In addition to the lodge's opening, the institute published several digital media ads and a paid article about tourism in the travel magazine Wanderlust, authorities said.

According to statistics from the institute, the United Kingdom is currently the second market for tourists to Costa Rica from Europe, only surpassed by France. As of May, over 32,000 British tourists have visited Costa Rica.

Promoting Costa Rica in England is one of the most recent actions by the institute to boost tourism. Recently, authorities designed an advertising campaign by sponsoring two Spanish soccer players to promote the country as a destination for adventure sports and outdoor activities.

Authorities expect a significant increase in tourists after a new Visa for International Digital Nomads was recently made available in the country.

To support tourism operators in indigenous zones, authorities launched the "Raíces" program (Roots in the English language), which exclusively offers non-reimbursable grants to indigenous tourism entrepreneurs.

In June, many Costa Rican companies participated in FIEXPO Latin America, which took place in Panamá.

As of April, Costa Rica had over 845,000 tourists in the country, according to the institute statistics.

Last year, over 1.3 million tourists arrived in Costa Rica.

As part of an overall plan to boost tourism, in April, authorities eliminated the covid pass requirement for fully-vaccinated people and the policy insurance requirement for unvaccinated people.

Since then, the government has eased the pandemic health guidelines. The country will no longer require tourists to present a negative covid-19 test, quarantine upon arrival, be fully vaccinated or have travel policy insurance. Also, the online health pass was disabled.
