After Costa Rica qualified for the Qatar 2022 Soccer World Cup, the Institute of Tourism designed an advertising campaign to increase tourism by sponsoring two Spanish soccer players.
The institute launched the advertising campaign at the Rosewood Villamagna Hotel in Madrid, to introduce the two Spanish players who were chosen to be the campaign image. Lucas Vázquez and Jesús Vallejo are two players from the Real Madrid team, and they are also part of the Male Soccer Spanish team.
Lucas Vásquez will be visiting Costa Rica as a guest of the institute in the coming months to share his trip on social media such as Facebook and Instagram.
The other player, Jesús Vallejo, is already in Costa Rica. It is expected that in the next few days he will start promoting Costa Rica as a vacation destination on his social media.
According to Ireth Rodríguez, Institute advertising director, these types of campaigns have the goal of positioning Costa Rica as a tourist destination, especially in activities such as wellness, adventure sports and outdoor activities, among others.
"High-level influencers (referring to the soccer athletes) enjoy and share with their followers what they experienced during their vacations in our country, something that will undoubtedly motivate many Spanish people to visit us," Rodríguez said.
For this advertising campaign, the institute hired the PR agency Blueroom Project.
According to statistics from the institute, as of May over 17,000 Spanish tourists entered by air. Currently, tourists from Spain are in the fourth level of visitors to the country, behind Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
As part of the strategies to boost tourism, in April, authorities eliminated the covid pass requirement for fully-vaccinated people and the policy insurance requirement for unvaccinated people.
Since then, the government eased the pandemic health guidelines. The country will no longer require tourists to present a negative covid-19 test, quarantine upon arrival, be fully vaccinated or have travel policy insurance. Also, the online health pass was disabled.
Last year, over 1.3 million tourists arrived in Costa Rica.
