Costa Rica continues celebrating the Men’s Soccer National Team that achieved a place in the World Cup that will be held in Qatar between November and December this year. 


As part of the celebrations, thousands of fans greeted the athletes on their arrival in the country last night.


The players arrived at 7:30 p.m. at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province and were cheered with flags, applauses, songs and music. Soccer fans followed the team path in a caravan from the airport to the Soccer Federation facilities, located in San Rafael District, in the same province.


At the Federation's headquarter the players along with their families, coach Luis Fernando Suárez, the support team and members of the federation, among others, continued with the celebration in a private dinner. 


Costa Rica has managed to qualify five times in the FIFA World Cup.


In 2018, the previous soccer world cup took place in Russia the Ticos did not manage to advance from the first round of the games.


In 2014, the Costa Rica team participated in the games that took place in Brazil where the players managed to qualify for the quarterfinals. That was the best level reached by the team, finishing in eighth place among the best world teams.



In 2006, the Costa Rican players participated in the World Cup that was held in Germany where they were unable to advance from the first round.


In 2002, the national team participated in the World Cup held in Japan and Korea. The players again failed to advance from the first round.


In 1990, the Costa Rican team managed to qualify for games for the first time. The world games took place in Italy where the team managed to reach the eighth round, finishing as number 13 of the best world teams.


On Tuesday, the national soccer team won their place in Qatar after defeating New Zealand 1-0 in the last game held at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, in Doha, Qatar.  


At the next World Cup, the Costa Rica team will face the rest of the country's teams in Group E, Spain, Germany and Japan.


This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the FIFA World Cup. The international tournament is the quadrennial men's football championship played by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The competition is scheduled to take place in Qatar from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18.
