From January to April, Costa Rica had 845,323 tourists in the country, according to the Tourism Institute statistics.
Most of the tourists, 773,535 arrived by air, which is equivalent to 80% of the total number of tourists who arrived in the country in the same period in 2019, before the pandemic.
The Juan Santamarķa International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province recorded 129,631 tourists entering the country in April. While at the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR), known as Guanacaste Airport, authorities documented the updated data on the arrivals of 64,537 tourists.
Tourists from the United States continue to be the leading tourism in Costa Rica. In April, there were 113,689 tourists from the U.S.
European tourists make up 40,316 tourists in April. Of these, the majority are from the UK with 7,740 visitors, France with 6,040 travelers, Germany with 6,016 tourists and the Netherlands with 1,105 visitors.
In April, the U.S. Department of State upgraded the recommendation level for traveling to Costa Rica from 4 to 2. Category 2 recommendation is the same as it had in 2019, before the pandemic.
To increase tourism, Costa Rica eliminated the covid pass requirement for fully-vaccinated people and the policy insurance requirement for unvaccinated people, beginning April 1.
Since then, the government eased the pandemic health guidelines. The country will no longer need tourists to present a negative covid-19 test, quarantine upon arrival, be fully vaccinated against covid-19, nor purchase travel policy insurance. The online Health Pass was also disabled.
All
airlines have renewed flying to Costa
Rica, the institute said.
This week, three U.S. airlines increased the frequency of their flights to the Guanacaste airport.
As part of the country's strategy to boost tourism, recently, the institute sponsored an article in the Canadian Pax Nouvelles online magazine to promote Costa Rica as an adventure destination.
Last year, over 1.3 million tourists arrived in Costa Rica.
