Representatives of the Tourism Institute participated in the Worldwide Exhibition for Incentive Travel, Meetings and Events Fair (IMEX) that took place in Frankfurt, Germany this week.

According to IMEX organizers, the fair had about 3,000 tourism representatives from 100 countries such as the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, Mexico, Chile and Argentina among many others.

Costa Rica's booth was represented by the following nine tourism companies: Amstar DMC, Costa Rica DMC, Centro de Convenciones de Costa Rica, Costa Rica CVB, Parador Nature Resort & Spa, CC Beach Front Papagayo, Marriott Hotels Costa Rica, Westin Reserva Conchal and Andaz Costa Rica Resort.

Costa Rica is recognized as a top destination for conferences for its accessibility to air connections, location, unforgettable experiences, robust health system, excellent tourist platform, good infrastructure for holding events, high level of education and diversity of activities that can be done in the country among others, the institute said in its statement.

In the country, the meeting industry represents 22% of tourism worldwide. The institute said that the business tourist, who comes to participate in conventions, has a high income and spends 3 to 4 times more than a traditional tourist.

Participation in the IMEX fair is one more strategy to increase tourism. Recently, the institute was promoting the country as a reliable destination at the World Travel Market (WTM) tourist fair which was held in Brazil.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of February, the Tourism Institute recorded more than 554,000 tourists visiting the country. That is over 216,000 more visitors than the same period in 2022.

Last year, about 2.3 million tourists visited the country. That is one million more visitors than in 2021.
