By the A.M. Costa Rica staff As of February, the Tourism Institute recorded more than 554,000 tourists visiting the country.
That is over 216,000 more visitors than the 338,000 tourists who entered in the same period in 2022.
However, the number is below the 668,000 visitors registered in the country in the same period in 2019, the year before the covid-19 pandemic.
Most of the tourists, about 490,500 arrived by air, which is equivalent to 88% of the total number of tourists who arrived in January and February.
Of these, more than 326,000 tourists entered the country at the Juan Santamarķa International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province. While over 163,600 entered the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste Province.
The rest of the visitors entered via land border ports of entry or by sea.
The
United States continues to be
the leading nationality visiting
Costa Rica. Authorities
documented more than 260,700
tourists from the U.S., which is
equivalent to 53% of the total
number of visitors. Also,
more than 75,700 Canadian
tourists visited the country,
while over 9,900 came from
Mexico. Authorities
registered more than 99,500
European tourists. Of these, the
majority came from France with
more than 19,500 travelers, the
U.K. with over 17,000 tourists,
over 16,000 from Germany and
more than 6,500 visitors from
Spain, among other countries. From
South America, the institute
statistics show over 22,500
tourists from countries such as
Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and
Chile among others. The
data show that the country made
steady progress towards
reactivating the tourism sector,
which has been one of the
hardest industries hit during
the pandemic. The
institute has launched many
international advertising
campaigns encouraging tourism to
Costa Rica. Recently,
authorities were promoting the
country as a reliable
destination at the World
Travel Market (WTM) tourist
fair which was held at the
Expo Center North in Sao
Paulo, Brazil.
