By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Surveillance and control actions are increasing in and around the Protected Wild Areas throughout the country, due to the boost in tourists during the holidays, reported the National System of Conservation Areas, Sinac, the organization in charge of the management of all the wild areas and national parks in the country. Sinac aims to prevent crimes such as illegal logging, robbery of species of flora and fauna, forest fires, among others within and around wild protected zones. Surveillance operations include park rangers patrols in and around protected areas, checkpoints on nearby highways and even patrols in the maritime zone in parks located at the coast. According to the authorities, the holiday operations cost almost $35,000. The budget covers expenses such as transportation and food for 630 people who will carry out the operations, such as park rangers, police officers, lifeguards, Red Cross officers, firefighters and volunteers. Authorities call on people visiting protected wild areas to avoid removing plants and taking wild animals. In wild zones it is forbidden to make bonfires, hunting, fishing, and logging. In accordance with Law No.7317 of Conservation of Wildlife, there is a prison sentence and fines to people found guilty of committing crimes against flora and fauna within protected wild areas. Tourists should not present the covid pass, as a requirement to enter the natural parks and conservation areas, authorities said. Natural parks in the country will keep their doors open to visitors during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
