President Rodrigo Chaves received the fourth dose of the vaccine against covid-19.

His inoculation was released in a video published by the government on Wednesday, even though it was filmed on Monday, the day after he was sworn in as president of Costa Rica.

According to Chaves, the decision to get vaccinated against covid is "a voluntary and not mandatory act."

One of Chaves’s first acts as president was the announcement of end the facemask and covid vaccination mandates.

"This government respects the autonomy of the will of Costa Ricans, which means their freedom," he said.

Chaves recommends that people get vaccinated because the pandemic is not over. "In fact, our government is committed to maintaining the availability of doses to vaccinate the entire population," he said.

However, the presidential decree published on Wednesday shows there is a continued mandatory vaccination for public employees.

What was eliminated was the obligation to wear a face mask in public spaces. The mandatory wearing of facemasks applies only in public or private spaces providing medical services, such as hospitals and clinics.

According to Social Security, more than 24,000 people already received their second booster shot or fourth dose. The second booster is available for people over 50 years old, only after four months have passed since getting their first booster dose.

Costa Rica is close to reaching its herd immunity target of 4.2 million people fully vaccinated in the country, of a total population of about 5.1 million inhabitants.

Should authorities continue with the vaccination campaign until reaching the country's herd immunity?
