This week, President Rodrigo Chaves announced two decrees to eliminate the mandatory use of a mask and the obligation for public employees to be vaccinated against covid.

On Wednesday, both decrees were published in the official government newspaper, La Gaceta, allowing its content open to the public.

In the first decree, No. 43543-S, about the obligation for public employees to be vaccinated against covid-19, the only change was a request to "public institutions of the State and the private sector not to apply dismissal sanctions in the cases of employees do not have the complete vaccination scheme against covid-19."

The mandatory vaccination for public employees, issued by the previous government of Carlos Alvarado, continues. According to Social Security, over 4.1 million people are fully vaccinated against covid-19.

Statistics also show more than 24,000 people already received their second booster shot or fourth dose.  President Rodrigo Chaves received the fourth dose this week.

In the case of employees of private companies, it is up to the owner of the company to decide whether or not to order their employees to complete the vaccination schedule against covid-19.

The decree also asks the National Vaccination Commission for updated technical and statistical studies and recommends which employees may be affected by dismissal sanctions for failure to be vaccinated.

In addition, the decree asks the commission for technical studies that demonstrate the effect of mandatory vaccination, including an analysis of international evidence on the vaccination.

The second decree, No. 43544-S, orders the mandatory use of facemasks for all front-line health workers in the country's public and private sectors.

In addition, the mandatory use of a facemask is ordered for people when they enter any health establishment in the country.

Regarding the use of facemasks in other public spaces (no medical care spaces), the use of this protection device is not mandatory anymore.

In the case of private companies, it is up to the owner of the company to decide whether or not to order continue the facemask rule indoors.

People have the choice of wearing (or not) a facemask in public spaces that are not related to health care services.

However, the Ministry of Health is also allowed by this decree, to vary the scope of these rules "if the epidemiological situation in the country merits it."
