Rica is closing in on its herd
immunity target of 4.2 million people
fully vaccinated in the country, of
the total population of about 5.1
million inhabitants. According
to Social Security records, the
country's vaccination campaign has
applied over 10.7 million doses. Of
these, 4.1 million people completed
their two-dose treatment, including
more than 281,000 children. The
country requires about 154,471 second
doses applied to reach its herd
immunity. More than
2.2 million already received their
booster shots. People over 18 years
old are eligible for the booster, or
third dose, but only if four months
have passed since getting their second
dose. Statistics
also show more than 24,000 people
already received their second booster
shot or fourth dose. The second
booster is available for people over
50 years old, only after four months
have passed since getting their first
booster dose.
The extra dose is also available for people from 12 to 49 years old who are immunodeficiency patients. These are people whose immune systems have the disability to fight infectious diseases and cancer.
The covid-19 vaccination campaign is open to everyone over the age of 5 years old, regardless of immigration status, visiting or living in Costa Rica. The list of vaccination centers can be found on the Covid Vaccination Campaign website.
Accessing the vaccine has not been an issue for inoculating people living in Costa Rica, especially since vaccines are available all over the country. So far the country has imported over 13 million vaccines.
Of these more than 3.7 million doses have been donated by friend countries such as France, Spain, the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Austria. In addition, donations were made by AstraZeneca and Pfizer corporations.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported 8,444 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1% death rate. The pandemic has killed over 6.2 million people worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.
