Despite the ban-on-driving rule and early closure time for bars, stores and places to buy liquor established by authorities to try to reduce the covid-19 contagion, the Traffic Police reported more than 3,000 positive DUI cases.

According to the police, this year, from January to November, they detected 3,163 positive DUI cases. This is 27% more than the same period in 2020 when 2,491 cases were reported.

Of the total positive DUI cases, there were 2,330 people arrested that tested with over 0.75 grams of alcohol in their system. They were arrested and their vehicles were impounded. Drivers also have to pay a fine of approximately $510, plus take the penalty of 6 points on their driving record.

When a driver is penalized with 6 points on their driving record, they are forced to take the driving course again and must score a minimum of 80 points out of 100 to renew their driver’s license.

Also, 313 drivers had blood alcohol results between 0.20 and 0.75 grams. They were not arrested but they must pay the same fine of about $500 plus the penalty of 6 points on their driving record.

The remaining 520 drivers tested with a very low blood-alcohol level that they will not receive any sanction.

As of November, officers reported 315 deaths caused by traffic accidents.

Last week, the police reported an increase in reckless driving fines.

Next year, there will be a 1.91% increase in fines for breaking traffic laws.
