By the A.M. Costa Rica staff As of January 1, 2022, there will be a 1.91% increase in fines for breaking traffic laws, announced the Ministry of Transports. According to the ministry, the increase was approved by the Court Superior Council, based on the Consumer Price Index. Drivers are warned that from next month, fines for drunk driving, speeding, using the opposite lane on a bridge, among others that are classified as " A-Level", will apply a fine of approximately $527. In addition to the fine, the driver will receive a 6 point penalty on his driver's license record. Concerning violations classified as "B-Level" - such as taking children under five years old in a motorcycle, or carrying children without safety devices in the vehicle, a fine of about $356 will be issued. In the case of fines classified as "C-Level" such as driving on sidewalks or driving without having a driver's license, among others, the fine will be approximately $164. In the case of the lowest fines classified as "D or E-Level", such as driving with an expired license, not carrying a fire extinguisher, among others, the fine will be between $50 to $85. According to the ministry, the money generated with the payment of the fines is used to cover the Traffic Police expenses, road safety campaign expenses, maintain the road traffic signs, aid the Red Cross, among others. Drivers who want to appeal a fine made by traffic police have the option of claiming by email. Also, vehicle owners whose license plates were seized by traffic officers could recover them through home delivery services.
