By the A.M. Costa Rica staff This year, from January to November, despite the ban-on-driving rule, the limited hours allowed to drive, the Traffic Police reported 315 deaths caused by traffic accidents. According to statistics, of the total of deaths, 97 were young people between 21 and 30 years old. And 87 deaths were people between 31 and 40 years old. Reports reveal that 28% of the deathly accidents happened at night, 131 happened between 6 p.m. and midnight. And 51 happened between midnight and 6 a.m. This is despite the ban on driving rule ordered by the government since 2020, the pandemic mandate limits the use of the vehicle mostly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day. Among the main causes of these road accidents were dark roads, fatigue, speeding, alcohol and drugs, the police said. One of the most recent fatal accidents happened on Saturday at 9 p.m. in San Carlos Canton, Alajuela Province. According to the report of the Red Cross accidents monitoring department, two Costa Rican men, surnamed Esquivel-Salas, 64, and Soto-Chacón, 55, died when their car crashed into a bridge. The police also recently reported more than 2,000 DUI arrested. Officers call on drivers to take more precautionary measures when driving, especially this month when people tend to attend Christmas parties and drink more liquor. People can report suspects of reckless driving behavior to the Traffic Law by dialing the 911 emergency line. --------------------- What is the death rate in road accidents in your country?
