Reckless driving continues on an upswing, more than 8,000 drivers were fined for breaking the Traffic Law, during the Holy Week from April 2 to 9.

According to the Ministry of Public Transport, among the top felonies were 607 drivers for disrespecting the yellow line and invading the oncoming lane. The fine is $530 in addition to a 6-point penalty on the driver's license.

When a driver is penalized on their driving record, they are forced to retake the driving course and score a minimum of 70 points out of 100 to renew their driver's license.

Also, officers fined over 300 drivers for wrongful parking. They must pay about a $90 fine. The Traffic Law authorizes officers to seize the license plates or even the vehicle for improper parking.

Speeding is another issue for police. There have been 254 drivers fined for speeding. The fine for driving over 80 miles per hour is about $480 in addition to the 6-point penalty on the driver's license.

Also, police identified 77 positive DUI with more than 0.75 grams of alcohol in their systems. These drivers committed the "A-Level" fine, meaning they were arrested and their vehicles were impounded. Drivers also have to pay a fine of approximately $560, plus take a penalty of 6 points on their driving record.

Texting or talking on the cell phone are some of the reckless maneuvers explaining the 16 drivers and motorcycle riders ticketed. They were fined a $180 penalty that officers issued.

Police continued seizing vehicles during the holidays. About 229, drivers lost their vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles or bicycles, plus 898 vehicle plates were seized due to transgressions of the Traffic Law.

Anyone who needs to make any claim or procedure related to a vehicle, license, plates or fines must request an appointment to visit Cosevi facilities to recover the vehicle or its plates. This appointment must be requested on the Cosevi website, enabled in Spanish language only.

On Tuesday, Traffic Police resumed their usual driving restrictions in San José City, after the holiday break.

The first quarter of the year, from January to March, closed with 120 deaths in traffic accidents, police reported.

Last year closed with 484 deaths in traffic accidents, authorities reported.

People can report suspects of reckless driving behavior to the Traffic Law by dialing the 911 emergency line.
