The new overpass for grade separation was inaugurated in Limonal Canton, Guanacaste Province, the Ministry of Public Transport announced.

According to the ministry, the overpass allows for better traffic flow due to the major project that is being carried out on Route 1, known as the North Inter-American Highway, specifically in the area between the cantons of Cañas and Limonal.

The two-level overpass is specifically located at the intersection between routes 1 and 18, allowing for easier access to the La Amistad bridge over the Tempisque River.

The new structure has four lanes on the lower level for uninterrupted passage of vehicles on Route 1. It also has a traffic circle on the upper level that allows vehicles easy access to the four cardinal points.

"The importance of this project is not only for tourism in the province of Guanacaste but for the entire region, as this route is key for the transport of goods between Central American countries," the ministry said in its statement.

Authorities report that 88% of progress has been achieved in the Route 1 highway lengthening project.

The highway improvement project was budgeted at about $90 million which will be covered with a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). To carry out the task, the ministry hired the private company Consorcio AZVI.

The project includes the expansion of the highway to four lanes in an area of 20.8 km of the North Inter-American highway. The entirety of the first road base has already been installed and work is being carried out to conclude with the application of the pavement.

In addition, 60% progress is recorded in the construction of 16 fauna crossroads, of these 6 are aerial and 10 terrestrial.

An 85% progress is also reported in two overpasses that will be located in the districts of San Miguel and Aserradero.

The project also includes the construction of seven bridges over the Desjarretado, Javillos, San Miguel, Lajas, Higuerón rivers and two over the Salitral River.

They are also building seven pedestrian bridges over the same rivers. Of these five they are almost fully built. The remaining two are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

According to the ministry, more infrastructure improvements are taking place in the country.

Recently, authorities reported progress on the construction of three bridges over the rivers that cross between the beaches of Garza and Nosara in Guanacaste.

Also in July, Route 4 in Alajuela Province was fixed.

Earlier last month, construction broke ground for the installation of three bridges in Alajuela.
