The XL National Sports Games will be dedicated to para-athlete and Olympic medalist Sherman Guity-Guity.

Guity, who stands out for having won a gold and silver medal at the Tokyo 2020-2021 World Paralympic Games, was the athlete chosen to light the flame at the opening of the National Sports Games that began on Wednesday.

The dedication to the competition is not only in honor of Guity's example and brilliant international career but also for being the representative of sports for people with physical disabilities. This year, the national games will include competition in six sports for people with disabilities.

Guity was born in Limón Province on December 3, 1996. Since very young he has stood out in racing competitions at the National Sports Games.

However, in August 2017, a car crash resulted in serious injuries to Guity. The athlete lost part of his left leg in that accident. Despite this circumstance, his dedication and persistence made him continue to do sports during his recovery period.

Currently, he has specialized in 100 and 200-meter races for athletes with disabilities.

In 2018 Guity managed to qualify to compete in the Arizona Grand Prix, in the USA. The same year he qualified for the Barranquilla Open in Colombia.

In 2019 he managed to qualify for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil and the Lima Open in Peru.

At the 2021 Paralympic World Games in Tokyo, Japan, Guity won a silver medal in the 100-meter dash and gold in the 200-meter dash.

In May 2022, he qualified for the Nottwil Grand Prix in Switzerland where he won a gold medal.

In July 2022, Guilty won first place in the world athletics ranking at the Para Athletics Grand Prix in Monterrey, Mexico.

In December 2022, Guity was declared the Parathlete of America by the Americas Paralympic Committee (APC).

In addition to participating in this year's National Sports Games, Guity continues his training to participate in the Dubai Grand Prix, which will take place in February, in the United Arab Emirates UAE.

Thousands are expected to attend the opening ceremony of the National Games that will take place this Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Rafael Bolaños Stadium, located in El Coyol Canton in Alajuela Province.
