The opening ceremony of the XL National Sports Games will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. at the Rafael Bolaños Stadium, in El Coyol Canton, Alajuela Province.

According to the Sports Institute, this year Alajuela has been chosen as the host province of the national competitions that will take place from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1.

The competition of 58 sports disciplines will take place at several stadiums and sports centers located in the following cantons: Alajuela City, Palmares, Grecia, San Ramón, Naranjo, Sarchi, Poas, San Mateo, Atenas, Zarcero and San Carlos.

The competing sports this year include tennis, taekwondo, judo, chess, soccer, skating, boxing, karate, basketball, volleyball, cycling, archery, rugby, skateboarding, car racing, artistic gymnastics, swimming and basketball among many others.

Games schedule will be published on the institute's website.

Authorities call on the public to support the athletes by going to watch the games, especially since they are free admission.
