Representatives of the Institute of Tourism participated in the Seatrade Cruise Global 2023 Fair, which was held at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., U.S.A.
There were more than 85 tourists from destinations such as Europe, the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America, among many others. The fair brought together more than 80 cruise lines, tour operators, suppliers and travel agencies from around the world.
According to the institute, the fair is considered the most important event for the international cruise industry.
Maritime tourism generates employment on the country's coasts. When ships dock, passengers tend to disembark for activities, benefiting local tour operators, and artisans among others.
Executives of Costa Rican private tourism companies participated in the fair such as Swiss Travel Tour agency, Asuaire Tour Operator and ILG Logistics among others.
While participants explored competitor booths, authorities held meetings with representatives of cruise lines, the Florida Cruise Federation and the International Association of Cruise Lines, the institute said.
The Costa Rica booth had representatives offering general information about the country, port descriptions, tourist attractions, facilities, entry requirements and health protocols.
Institute statistics show that during the last cruise season (2021-2022), 149 cruise ships visited the country's ports, representing 109,945 cruise passengers.
Before the pandemic, during the 2018-2019 season, about 250,000 tourists were arriving on cruise lines annually. That year, the cruise industry generated about $29.2 million in income.
