$12 billion, authorities say

In 2022, Costa Rica's exports reached over $12.1 billion, according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade.


However, last year's exports decreased by more than $2.4 billion compared to 2021.

 

Among the sectors with the highest growth in exports are metalworking (38%), agricultural products (19%), food (15%), pharmaceutical (6%) and electronics (5%).


Some of the leading export products are medical devices, electrical wires, sugar, pineapple, syrups, coffee, electrical cables and plants among others.


The main buying markets for products made in Costa Rica are Central America 14%, North America 13%, Europe 13%, the Caribbean 13%, South America 12% and Asia 9%.


In 2021, Costa Rica's exports reached a figure of more than $14.5 billion, more than $2.8 billion compared to the same period in 2020.

 

To increase exports, the government legalized medical cannabis and hemp production in Costa Rica.


Recently, Costa Rican companies were promoting ornamental tropical plants at the IPM Essen fair held in Germany.
