The Social Security public clinic located in Curridabat Canton in San Joé Province launches a campaign for cancer detection in the uterus and breast for women.

The goal is to get all women tested for the common types of cancer, including foreigners with residence identification known as DIMEX.

"The importance of this campaign is the early detection of cervical cancer," Gabriela Clare, director of the clinic said. "We'll attend women over 18 years of age, who have begun to have sexual relations, and who are assigned to the Curridabat public clinic."

According to Social Security, health workers have the goal of performing Papanicolaou tests, better known as a pap smear, on at least 370 women. In addition to mammograms for their patients.

The test known as Papanicolaou is a method of cervical screening used to detect potentially precancerous and cancerous processes in the cervix opening of the uterus or womb or colon in women.

Mammography, also called mammograms, is the process of using low-energy X-rays to examine the human breast for diagnosis and screening. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through the detection of characteristic masses or microcalcifications.

“October commemorates the fight against breast cancer, we want to highlight the importance of integrated women's health," Ebais doctor Greivin Picado Monge said.

The cancer detection campaign, which ends on Nov. 4 is open to patients assigned to the Curridabat public clinic, known as Ebais.

Clinic workers will call patients to set up medical appointments. They recommend for patients to keep their contact information updated.

People with a pending Papanicolaou or Mammography can obtain more information about the medical campaign by visiting the clinic information office.

This is one of a handful of non-emergency medical service campaigns that Social Security has launched to reduce waiting times for medical appointments. Recently, the San Vicente de Paul Public Hospital carried out a campaign for Salpingectomy surgeries for its patients.

During the first quarter of this year, from January to March, Social Security increased the number of surgeries and medical appointments due to decreased cases of covid-19.
