The mandatory order of the vaccine against covid-19 for public employees remains intact, according to the National Commission for Vaccination.

The study was done in response to a decree signed by President Rodrigo Chaves and the Minister of Health, which ordered an investigation to support the rulings issued by Daniel Salas, the former Minister of Health.

“The mandatory vaccination of the adult population is not a merely scientific measure, it is also a strategy that helps to increase the coverage of vaccines in the population in groups of workers identified as at risk and those who provide public services, with the aim of to protect the health and safety of the entire population,” the commission said in its statement.

After an analysis made by the commission, they made a series of recommendations to Joselyn Chacón, Minister of Health. Among the most important reasons given by the specialists to continue with the vaccination mandate are:

  • If they are not vaccinated, health workers could get covid and die, but they are in charge of caring for covid patients.

  • Workers face the risk in their workplaces of being infected with the virus.

  • More health services will reopen once more people are vaccinated.

  • Vaccinating all health workers prevents hospitals from being a source of contagion.

  • Cases of covid-19 are currently increasing in the country.

  • The vaccination campaign protects the unvaccinated population, such as children from 0 to 5 years of age who could become seriously ill.

The commission concludes that there is scientific evidence proving that vaccination against covid is the best strategy to reduce the transmission of the disease. It mainly reduces the number of serious cases and mortality.

On May 8, Rodrigo Chaves-Robles was sworn in as the 49th President of Costa Rica and immediately announced a series of regulation changes in public health, such as studying the mandatory vaccination against covid-19 for public employees, as well as canceling the mandatory use of facemasks in public spaces.

However, next day, Chaves recommended that people should get vaccinated because the pandemic is not over.

The country's vaccination campaign applied over 11 million doses, according to Social Security records.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported 8,495 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1% death rate. The pandemic has killed more than 6.3 million people worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.
