The country's vaccination campaign has applied over 11 million doses, according to Social Security records. Which makes Costa Rica closer to reaching its herd immunity target of 4.2 million people fully-vaccinated of the total population of about 5.1 million inhabitants.
Of the total vaccines applied, more than 4.4 million people received their first dose treatment, including more than 376,000 children.
Also, over 4.1 million people completed their two-dose treatment, including more than 298,000 children. The country requires about 131,300 second doses to be applied in adults to reach its herd immunity.
More than 2.2 million vaccinated people already received their booster shots. People over 18 years old are eligible for the booster, or third dose, but only if four months have passed since getting their second dose.
Also, over 137,000 people already received their second booster shot or fourth dose. The second booster is available for people over 50 years old, contingent four months have passed since getting their first booster dose.
This fourth dose is also available for people from 12 to 49 years old who are patients with immunodeficiency. These are people whose immune systems cannot fight infectious diseases and cancer.
The covid-19 vaccination campaign is open to everyone over the age of 5 years old, regardless of immigration status, visiting or living in Costa Rica. For more information, people should visit their local community clinic, known as Ebais, or visit the Covid Vaccination Campaign website.
Accessing the vaccine has not been an issue for inoculating people living in Costa Rica. Vaccines are available all over the country. So far the country has imported over 13 million vaccines.
Of these, over 3.7 million doses have been donated by friend countries such as France, Spain, the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Austria. And corporations such as AstraZeneca and Pfizer.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported 8,495 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1% death rate. The pandemic has killed more than 6.3 million people worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.
