Red Cross assists 358 people during the days before the pilgrimage By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Costa Rican Red Cross has installed seven first aid care stands, to provide medical assistance to the thousands of people who will carry out the pilgrimage to the province of Cartago* on August 1st and 2nd. Even though the main event is still a week away some pilgrims decide to set out early. Red Cross volunteers have already assisted 358 of them. According to the statistics of the Red Cross, in the pilgrimage of 2018, 3,038 people were treated per health problems during their journey. This year, the Red Cross reports having "one thousand, two hundred volunteers and among them there are doctors, medical emergency technicians, and nurses" to assist the pilgrims. "We have prepared to give the medical attention to pilgrims who need it while they walking to Cartago," said Luis Guzmán of the Red Cross. "It is important that people take preventive measures to avoid risky situations." The Red Cross specialists give the following recommendations to pilgrims: - Dress in cotton fabrics that allow you to sweat properly. - Wear brightly colored clothes to be seen by drivers. - Avoid overexposure to sunlight. - Take with you at least two pairs of non-new shoes. - If you have blisters, do not touch them, to avoid infections. - Take two or more pairs of socks with you and change your socks every time they get wet with sweat or rain. - Wear a coat to avoid getting wet from rain or dew at night. - Bring an umbrella. - If you suffer from any chronic illnesses, ask your doctor before making the long pilgrimage. - Have a copy of your ID with you. - Don't carry excessive weight, load a backpack with the basics: toilet paper, spotlight, coat, cape and umbrella, documents for personal identification and additional information such as where and to whom to inform if necessary. ----------------------------- What other advice would you give to the pilgrims?
