The Ministry of Public Education announced that approximately 1,200,000 students (from public and private schools and high-schools) will return to in-person lessons this 2022 school year, which will begin on Thursday, February 17.

According to Steven González, Minister of Public Education, all health guidelines for safe return to classrooms will be met. The protocols include: hand washing, use of a mask all the time, people with covid-19 symptoms are prohibited from entering school, 6 feet social distance, among others.

The decision to resume in-person lessons is due to the large number of people vaccinated in the country. In December, authorities recorded 88.2% of people between the ages of 12 and 19 have received one vaccination dose, while 72% are fully vaccinated.

In the case of people aged 20 to 39 years, 91% have received the first dose and 76.8% are fully vaccinated, authorities said.

If the school does not have potable water or if there is a closure order issued by the Ministry of Health, the authorities should find an optimal place for students to receive in-person lessons. If that can not be achieved, students must continue with virtual lessons.

All students over 12 years old, teachers and administrative staff must be vaccinated against covid-19. In the case of students who cannot be vaccinated due to health conditions, they should receive the lessons virtually.

This month launches the campaign to vaccinate youth over the age of 5 years old. Recently, the government announced a budget of more than $23.3 million for the purchase of more Pfizer vaccines for kids.

The 2022 school year will finish on Dec. 22.

This week the ministry is the focus of confusion because even though the vast majority of students finished the 2021 school year in December, they must return to classes this week.
