The construction of new highways, as part of the Cantonal Road Network Program, is advancing in all provinces, according to the Ministry of Public Transportation.


Road construction is taking place in several cantons, such as in La Cruz, Upala, Los Chiles, Turrubares, Mora, Cañas, Tilarán, Abangares, Bagaces, Esparza and Hojancha, these in the provinces of Guanacaste and Alajuela. The roads in those cantons have been completely built, the ministry said.


Authorities report having completed the construction of roads in the cantons of Desamparados, Aserrí, Acosta, León Cortés and Tarrazú, these in San José Province.


With a progress of 98%, several highways have been built in the cantons of Pérez Zeledón, Osa, Quepos, Coto Brus and Buenos Aires, located in San José and Puntarenas, authorities said.


Also with progress of 98%, the construction of roads in the cantons of Pococí, Sarapiquí, Los Chiles, Turrialba, Talamanca, Matina and Siquirres, these in the provinces of Limón and Cartago are completed, they said.





With a progress of 95%, the ministry reports that it is in the process of finishing the construction of highways in the cantons of Montes de Oro, Santa Cruz, Nandayure, Garabito, downtown Puntarenas, San Mateo, San Ramón, Peñas Blancas, San Carlos and Naranjo, these in the provinces of Guanacaste, Ajaluela and Puntarenas.


The highway infrastructure under construction will improve the accessibility between the cantons and the country's economy, the ministry said in its statement.


The $144 million project of 270- kilometers or 67 road segments was financed with a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank, the ministry said.


Road improvements and construction are carried out with construction teams from the ministry and the municipalities of each canton. Authorities estimate to finish all roads included in the project by February 2023.


According to the ministry, more infrastructure improvements are taking place in the country.   Recently, a new overpass for grade separation was inaugurated in Guanacaste Province.
