The Road Safety Council, the public organization in charge of registering fines for infractions of the traffic law, has set up a line (in the Spanish language) to allow inquiries about penalized points on the driver's license.

According to the authorities, drivers can now call line 2522-0900 extension #5, to know how many points were penalized in the licenses and how many fines were applied to the vehicle plate number.

In Costa Rica, there are two categories of fines for breaking the traffic law including a penalty of reduction in the points of qualification of the driver's license.

The category of offense "A" applies to drunk drivers, speeding 75 miles per hour (or 120 kilometers per hour) or more, driving with a suspended license, invading the opposite lane (in curves, bridges or intersections), making a U-turn in a forbidden zone, refuse to take the DUI test and exceeding the maximum levels of noise and gas emissions. The fine for those offenses is about $490 in addition to the 6-point penalty on the driver's license record.

The category of infraction "B" applies when the vehicle transports passengers under 12 years old without the corresponding safety device, when transporting hazardous materials, when the driver does not stop at red traffic lights or does not stop in corners with a stop sign, when the vehicle license plates do not correspond with the vehicle registration or when driving 25 miles per hour (or 40 kilometers per hour) above the maximum speed allowed.

In the case of motorcyclists, the "B" penalty applies for transporting children under 5 years old. The fine for these offenses is about $330 in addition to the penalty of reducing 4 points on the driver's license record.

The rest of the categories of offenses to the traffic law, do not apply the penalty of reduction of points in the license record.

The traffic phone line also provides information on the cost of hauling vehicles and information about driving tests, among other data.

As of March, more than 18,000 people were fined for reckless driving, such as failing to stop at a red light, wrongful parking, speeding and carrying children without the proper safety devices, among others.

In the same period, police reported over 200 traffic accident deaths.

In the same period, officers applied over 4,700 DUI tests.

Last year, more than 300 people died in traffic accidents.
