As of May, Traffic Police reported 212 traffic accident deaths, of these 177 were men and 35 women.
According to the police report, most of the fatalities were motorcycle riders (98), which is equivalent to 46% of deaths, 24 cases were sedan car drivers and 14 bike riders lost their lives, police said.
Statistics also show that from January to May, the number of fatalities increased, compared with the 170 deaths reported in the same period in 2021.
Among the main causes of road accidents this year were: speeding with 83 fatalities, driver risky maneuvers with 32 people, recklessness committed by pedestrians with 32 cases, driving on the opposite lane with 31 fatalities and drunk drivers with 10 deaths, among others, police said.
As of March, more than 18,000 people were fined for reckless driving, such as failing to stop at a red light, wrongful parking, speeding and carrying children without the proper safety devices, among others.
Also, during the same period, officers applied over 4,000 DUI tests.
Last year, more than 300 people died in traffic accidents.
Traffic Police officers urge people to report suspects of speeding to the police by dialing the 911 emergency line.
