Reckless driving continues on an upswing, as of September more than 30,300 drivers were fined for breaking the Traffic Law, according to Traffic Police.
Officers fined over 26,200 drivers for wrongful parking. They must pay about a $90 fine. The Traffic Law authorizes officers to seize the license plates or even the vehicle for improper parking.
Almost 2,000 drivers failed to stop at a red light. The drivers earned a fine of about $325 plus a four-point penalty on their license records.
More than 670 drivers were fined for making an unlawful U-turn. The fine is $530 in addition to a 6-point penalty on the driver's license.
Officials have fined over 1,500 drivers who must pay a penalty of $100 for not turning on their vehicle's lights at night. The law requires that from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. of the next day all vehicles must travel with the lights on. In the case of motorcycles, the lights must be on all day and night while traveling.
As of September, Traffic Police reported over 361 traffic accident-related deaths.
Last year, more than 300 people died in traffic accidents.
Police call on drivers to respect the law and take precautionary measures to avoid accidents. People can report any case of reckless driving to the 911 emergency line.
