Reckless
driving continues on an upswing in
Costa Rica. As of May 1st, more than
20,850 drivers were fined for breaking
the Traffic Law. The
Traffic Police reported that 9,850
drivers were fined for incorrect
parking. The most common types of
illegal parking are being over five
meters or closer to the ramps for
people with disabilities, being within
five meters of hydrants, being in
corners, being in an area where there
is a parking prohibition sign,
blocking the entrance to garages,
being over the sidewalks and blocking
the exit of emergency vehicles such as
firefighters and ambulances, among
others. They should pay a $115
penalty. Also,
there have been more than 6,800 fines
costing about $50 each, for vehicles
with missing parts such as missing a
windshield or bumper, not carrying a
fire extinguisher, not having brushes
to clean the windshield, not having an
extra tire, faulty lights and horn,
among others. More than
2,000 riders on motorcycles, ATVs,
bikes or bicycles, were sanctioned for
not wearing light or reflective
clothing. Riders must pay a fine of
about $115. Police
fined over 1,290 motorcycle riders for
not wearing a helmet or wearing it
incorrectly. In
addition, 75 drivers received a $50
fine for disrespecting the pedestrian
crossing zone.
Over 50 drivers were sanctioned with a $115 fine for driving more than 50 meters in reverse. The law actually forbids people from driving any further in reverse than is reasonable and only when it’s safe.
Some 50 motorcycle riders were sanctioned with a $450 fine for transporting children under 5 years by motorcycle. Children under 5 years old are not allowed to ride motorcycles because they cannot be properly supported by either the motorcycle or the adult who drives it.
Last week, police reported more than 3,370 drivers were fined for breaking the Traffic Law.
As of March, more than 2,700 DUI tests were applied by Traffic Police. Of these, police identified over 500 positive DUI with more than 0.75 grams of alcohol in their systems.
The first quarter of the year, from January to March, closed with 120 deaths in traffic accidents.
Last year closed with 484 deaths in traffic accidents. Police statistics show, 215 more deaths were registered compared to the 365 fatalities in 2021, which is an increase of 59%.
Police call on drivers to respect the law and take precautionary measures to avoid accidents. People can report any case of reckless driving to the 911 emergency line. ------------ What are the penalties for reckless driving in your country? We would like to know your thoughts on this story.
