When a
person has an injury to the knee
joint, which is known as knee
erosion, the patient suffers a lot
of pain, swelling and stiffness,
Edgar Fuentes Guillén, Chief of the
Orthopedics service said. The
surgery consisted of replacing the
tip of the femur and the tip of the
tibia that forms the knee joint with
stainless steel or titanium. To
prevent a clash of metals,
high-density synthetic material for
medical use is placed. "The
patient has pain relief, regains
mobility, the alignment of his
limbs," Fuentes said. According
to Social Security, before this
campaign, patients had their surgery
scheduled to be performed at Pérez
Zeledón Hospital, which is located
in rural San José Province. Since
the surgeries in Golfito began,
patients no longer have to be
transferred from the hospital.
The first surgery was performed on a 67-year-old woman, who required a replacement of her left knee. To carry out this procedure, the Orthopedics service had the support of the Surgery Room staff.
The knee replacement surgery campaign at Golfito Hospital is one of many massive medical services launched by Social Security. Last week, the Alajuela Hospital started their campaign to advance medical appointments for diagnostic tests.
Also, the Puntarenas Hospital launched its campaigns to tend to 1,500 patients.
Social Security reported an increase in the scheduling of surgeries throughout the country due to the decrease in attention to covid cases. The decrease in covid-19 patients allows for a gradual recovery in the supply of public medical services.
