Reckless driving continues on an upswing, more than 40,600 drivers were fined for breaking the Traffic Law, according to Traffic Police.

As of July, officers fined 21,126 drivers for wrongful parking. They must pay about an $80 fine. The Traffic Law authorizes officers to seize the license plates or even the vehicle for improper parking. In the same period last year, about 10,000 tickets were issued for the same fault.

Speeding is another issue for police. There have been 4,525 drivers fined for speeding, compared to the same period last year, which was about 3,300.

The fine for driving over 80 miles per hour is about $480 in addition to the 6-point penalty on the driver's license. When a driver is penalized on their driving record, they are forced to retake the driving course and score a minimum of 80 points out of 100 to renew their driver's license.

Another top fine was driving within the restricted area in the city of San José. Officers had issued 3,992 citations of $35 tickets. Restrictions for the daytime, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., in the zone inside the capital city, known as the Circunvalación Route, which include all the streets that are within the capital city.

The schedule of cars banned in the capital applies on weekdays and is based on the plate's last number, as follows:

  • Monday plates ending in 1 or 2 are banned.
  • Tuesday plates ending in 3 or 4 are banned.
  • Wednesday plates ending in 5 or 6 are banned.
  • Thursday plates ending in 7 or 8 are banned.
  • Friday plates ending in 9 or 0 are banned.

Also, 1,826 drivers failed to stop at a red light. This is 594 more drivers who were fined for the same cause last year, which were 1,232. The drivers earned a fine of about $325 plus a four-point penalty on their license records.

Police also reported that as of June, they had identified 1,203 positive DUI drivers with more than 0.75 grams of alcohol in their system. These drivers committed the "A-Level" fine. They were arrested and their vehicles were impounded. Drivers also have to pay a fine of approximately $500, plus take a six-point penalty on their driving record.

Officers reported that as of May, 7,947 drivers were fined for not using safety devices, Traffic Police reported. Of these, 828 drivers were fined for carrying children without the proper safety devices.

As of June, police reported 281 deaths caused by traffic accidents, 66 more than the 215 deaths reported in the same period the previous year.

Last year, more than 300 people died in traffic accidents.

Traffic Police officers urge people to report suspects of breaking the traffic law by dialing the 911 emergency line.
