Costa Rican paralympic athlete, Sherman Guity-Guity, qualified to compete in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2023 which will take place between February and May.
According to the Institute of Sports, Guity will compete at the Dubai Club for the People of Determination in the United Arab Emirates.
On Tuesday, he will leave for Dubai to compete in the 100 and 200-meter sprint in the T64 category, which refers to athletes who compete in speed and have a leg amputation.
Guity has been training at the athletics track of the Ciudad Deportiva in the Hatillo District and at the Physical Conditioning Gym in Parque Central La Sabana. “I am anxious, I already want to run, win and put Costa Rica on top,” Guity said.
This year, six countries are co-hosting the Grand Prix. The season will kick off at the Rades Olympic Athletics Stadium in Tunis the capital of Tunisia. Then, the games will take place in the UAE.
The competitions will continue in the Grand Stadium of Marrakesh, Morocco. Then, the prize will move to Centro De Alto Rendimiento Niños Heroes in Mexico. The next step will be at Armando Picchi Stadium in Jesolo, Italy. The final stop will take place at the Swiss Paraplegic Center (SPC) in Nottwil City.
The
season will mark the 10th
anniversary of the Grand Prix which
was launched in 2013 to give top
athletes more significant
opportunities to compete while
providing a platform to develop new
talents and excellence in
competition management. After
these games, Guity will also
participate in the World Para
Athletics Games that will take place
in Paris, France in July. He was
born in Limón Province on December
3, 1996. Since a very young age, he
has stood out in racing competitions
at the National Sports Games. However,
in August 2017, a car crash resulted
in Guity losing part of his left
leg. Despite this circumstance, his
dedication and persistence made him
continue to do sports during his
recovery period. Currently,
he has specialized in 100 and
200-meter races for athletes with
disabilities. In
2021, Guity won a gold medal in
the Tokyo Paralympic World Games.
