Costa Rica wins the award in the category, "Best Destination for Long Distance Travel," awarded by the German travel magazine Travelbook, in a ceremony that took place over the weekend in Frankfurt, Germany.

"Costa Rica was the first country in the world to be recognized for its environmental policy, which makes it a worthy winner of this category at the Travelbook Awards," reads the magazine.

The country leads with special characteristics focused on the environment, nature, sustainable tourism and affordability.

"This award allows us to continue to position the country as one of the destinations most committed to sustainability, protecting the environment and the ideal place to reconnect with nature," said Ireth Rodríguez, representative of the Tourism Institute.

Costa Rica is a destination that allows tourists to learn about culture, gastronomy and traditions, according to Rodríguez. In this country, tourists feel like one more "Tico" (Costa Rican) while they are vacationing, she said.

According to the institute, Costa Rica beat countries like Australia, South Africa, the United States and Indonesia in that category. The winning country was chosen by a jury of nine experts who responded to a detailed catalog of criteria for each destination and category.

The jury looked at the affordable destination, sustainability, safety, variety of activities, accessibility, cleanliness and water quality among others.

Germany is the second European country that generates more tourists in Costa Rica, only surpassed by the United Kingdom. This year, from January to August, authorities registered 43,505 German tourists arriving in the country by air.

This is the second international travel magazine recognizing Costa Rica as one of the best tourism destinations. Recently, the Times Travel Awards hosted by Britain's oldest national daily newspaper, The Times, selected Costa Rica as the best emerging destination.

In addition to the publicity from the new award, the cruise season opens in Costa Rica. Authorities expect to exceed the number of cruise ships that arrived in 2019, the year before the pandemic.

Since the country shut down over the pandemic in 2020, the tourism sector is slowly recovering. As of June, there have been over 1.2 million tourists in Costa Rica.

Last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
