During the ninth edition of the "Times and Sunday Times Travel Awards", hosted by Britain's oldest national daily newspaper, The Times, Costa Rica was selected as the best emerging destination.

According to the Tourism Institute, Costa Rica was recognized due to its sustainable tourism policy, the well-being of the inhabitants, the many activities that can be done outdoors and the "Pura Vida" lifestyle of Costa Ricans.

The volcanoes, cloud forests, tropical jungles, beaches and the variety of animal species were other reasons why Costa Rica was awarded the prize, the authorities said.

“This award reinforces Costa Rica's position as a tourist destination in Europe," Ireth Rodríguez, Head of Promotion for the institute, said. "Furthermore, it is a great opportunity, especially since the award was given by one of the most prestigious newscasts in the United Kingdom and this recognition originates from a vote of its readers, who showed high interest in visiting the country."

The Sunday Times Travel Awards recommends sites like Manuel Antonio National Park, and Corcovado National Park, both in Puntarenas. As well as the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and the Tortuguero National Park, both in Limón, among other places.

The places recommended to visitors by Sunday Times can be found on its website.

The best time to visit Costa Rica is summer, according to a report by Lucy Perrin. “This time is from November to April if you want to experience cloud forests without rain and see most of the wildlife,” she said.

Statistics from the institute show that this year more than 36,000 tourists from the United Kingdom entered the country by air.

To increase tourism, Costa Rica eliminated the covid pass requirement for fully-vaccinated people and the policy insurance requirement for unvaccinated people.

The government has eased the pandemic health guidelines. The country will no longer require tourists to present a negative covid-19 test, quarantine upon arrival, be fully vaccinated against covid-19, nor purchase travel policy insurance. The online Health Pass was also disabled.

So far this year, from January to June, there have been over 1.2 million tourists in Costa Rica.

As part of an overall plan to boost tourism, recently, authorities promoted Costa Rica in England.

Authorities expect a significant increase in tourists after a new visa for International Digital Nomads was recently made available in the country.

Last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
