Costa Rica, through the Accessible Tourism Network, signed an agreement with the Federation of Chambers of Tourism of Central America to develop more accessible tourist services for people with disabilities in the country.

The agreement was signed during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR), which takes place in Madrid, Spain, where representatives of 35 Costa Rican tourism companies are seeking more Spaniard tourists.

According to authorities, the agreement is part of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, considering the rights of people with disabilities to carry out recreational activities.

The agreement allows Costa Rica to: promote accessibility and inclusion in tourism, develop campaigns to promote accessible tourism, train people who work in tourism and improve the conditions and services offered to people with disabilities.

The Federation of Chambers of Tourism of Central America formed on February 4, 2004, includes the tourism chambers of Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Costa Rica has a law in place, Law 7600, which regulates the tourism industry in the country to include accessibility to tourist sites for people with disabilities in places such as hotels, theaters, museums, volcanoes and national parks among others.

According to the Tourism Institute, there are still challenges to be met regarding access to beaches for people with physical disabilities. Most popular beaches don't offer direct access to the water, user-friendly showers, parks or bathrooms.

Recently, the Accessible Tourism Network built an access ramp to the beach at Puntarenas Beach in Puntarenas Province.

During the first half of 2022, there have already been over 1.2 million tourists in Costa Rica.

In 2021, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
