Representatives of the Tourism Institute participated in the IMEX Frankfurt tourism fair that took place in Germany.

According to IMEX Frankfurt organizers, the reopened fair closed its doors over two years ago due to the covid-19 pandemic. Their grand reopening had about 100 countries and over 2,800 tourism representatives participate.

The presence of Costa Rica at the fair is important for the reactivation of tourism and the economy, due to the boost in jobs, said Dennis Witherlaw, President of the Costa Rica Convention Bureau.

According to the institute, Costa Rica stands out as a destination for meetings due to several advantages such as air connections, a strategic location, unforgettable experiences, a robust health system, an excellent tourist platform, good infrastructure for holding events, a high level of education and the diversity of activities that can be done in the country among others.

In the country, the meeting industry represents 22% of tourism worldwide. The tourist who comes to participate in conventions has a high income and spends 3 to 4 times more than a traditional tourist, the institute said.

As part of the strategies to boost tourism, in April, authorities eliminated the covid pass requirement for fully-vaccinated people and the policy insurance requirement for unvaccinated people.

Since then, the government eased the pandemic health guidelines. The country will no longer require tourists to present a negative covid-19 test, quarantine upon arrival, be fully vaccinated against covid-19 or have travel policy insurance. Also, the online Health Pass was disabled.

Also in April, the U.S. Department of State upgraded the recommendation level for traveling to Costa Rica from 4 to 2. Category 2 recommendation is the same as it had in 2019, before the pandemic.

Recently, the institute launched a campaign with free trips to Costa Rica for 15 people and their companions from Canada and the U.S. as part of its strategy to increase tourism.

As of April, Costa Rica had over 845,000 tourists in the country, according to the institute statistics.

Last year, over 1.3 million tourists arrived in Costa Rica.
