At the World Travel Market in London, UK, ForwardKeys firm, announced that Costa Rica is one of the top global destinations of 2022.

ForwardKeys was founded in 2010 providing information on a database of air travel bookings in the industry. The firm published its annual Most Visited Destinations report.

According to the report, Costa Rica is the third most visited country, followed by Mexico and Turkey, which all welcomed the same number of visitors. The country has managed to recover the visitors level registered in 2019, despite the flight capacity seats being reduced by 4%.

The top country with tourists is lead by the Dominican Republic. Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 18, the Dominican Republic welcomed 5% more visitors than it did in 2019.

The strong representation of Central American and Caribbean destinations towards the top of the list reflects the relative strength of the U.S. tourism market. The approach taken by many highly tourism-dependent countries in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico throughout the pandemic imposed less severe covid-19 travel restrictions than elsewhere, which helped maintain their visitor economies. "As the year has progressed, they have consolidated their leadership position and begun to exceed pre-pandemic volumes," according to the report.

ForwardKeys also identified several major trends that have characterized travel in 2022. The strongest is recovery. The pandemic-related progressively lax travel restrictions and pent-up demand to travel helped a recent revival in business travel and major global events such as the World Expo in Dubai and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

However, the recovery has not been smooth. Initially, the highly virulent Omicron variant caused a great deal of concern and the reimposition of travel restrictions at the start of the year. Another factor stalling recovery was staff shortages, which resulted in chaotic scenes in airports before the start of the summer season.

Although Russia’s invasion of Ukraine massively impacted travel to and from Russia, as numerous countries imposed bans on direct flights, it has not caused long-haul travel to Europe to decline as much as one might have expected before the pandemic.

The full report can be found on the Most Visited Destinations 2022 website.

Last week, the British magazine Wanderlust Travel recognized Costa Rica as the most desired country by tourists. The country was recognized after obtaining good scores from a panel of expert judges and magazine readers' opinions.

Records show that during the first half of the year, there have already been over 1.2 million tourists in Costa Rica.

Just last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited Costa Rica.
