The Beijing, China- headquartered ride-hailing company Didi Chuxing Technology Co. (DiDi), announced the expansion of its operations in Costa Rica.

According to the firm, its Emergency Support Center, which handles customer services of its Central America, the Caribbean, and South America clients will be managed from its facilities in San José City

The company budgeted an investment of $2.2 million over the next two years to develop its support center. Costa Rica will be the second country, before Mexico, to host a center of this type, which provides assistance for incident reports involving drivers, delivery drivers, and riders/users.

“We continue to renew our commitment to and our confidence in Costa Rica, as we have from the beginning," Jorge Ordóñez, DiDi Regional Director, said. " We recognize the human talent that exists in this country, the economic and social stability, as well as the connectivity and technological talent that we find here.”

The emergency monitoring center is operated by Ti-Latina, a company of experts in the areas of technology and security. It currently has operations in Mexico, Chile, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Costa Rica.

DiDi's operation is part of the service sector in Costa Rica. According to the Costa Rican Investment Promotion, Cinde, this is the most dynamic sector in terms of job creation, with more than 100,000 jobs in 2021. Also, knowledge-based services exported $6.412 billion at the end of 2021.

So far, 87 people have been hired to work in the support center. The firm projected a hiring increase of 30%. They seek people with knowledge of computing packages and, preferably, with a command of either English or Portuguese. People interested in a job vacancy should send their resumes by email to talenthumano@tilatina.com.

DiDi has operated in Costa Rica since November 2019, while its company's Food Delivery opened operations in August 2021.

DiDi is one of many international companies investing in Costa Rica. Last week the New York-headquartered co-working and office rental firm, WeWork, inaugurated its second location in San José.

Even though new businesses are creating jobs in Costa Rica, the unemployment rate is 12%, according to the National Employment Survey. The survey reveals that, from March to May, there are approximately more than 293,000 people without registered jobs. Of these 162,000 are women, making up 55% of unemployed people in the country.
