By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Costa Rica has imported 6,926,385 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission. A shipment containing 107,640 doses of Pfizer vaccines arrived on a DHL cargo last night at the Juan Santamarķa International Airport. These are part of the 4,893,135 Pfizer doses imported already. The country purchased 6,002,165 Pfizer vaccines to inoculate more than 3 million people. Five countries have donated vaccines to Costa Rica. Last week, 56,800 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines were donated by the Dominican Republic. Early this month, 50,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines arrived. They were donated by the government of Austria. In September, 69,600 doses of AstraZeneca donated by the government of Spain were received. Also, 319,200 AstraZeneca doses were donated by Canada that month. In July, 503,100 doses of Pfizer vaccines were donated by the U.S. Costa Rica has also imported 775,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines as part of the 1,000,000 purchased doses for the treatment of more than 500,000 people. The country has already imported 259,350 doses through COVAX, which includes approved vaccines, such as AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna. These form part of the purchased 2,037,600 doses to provide treatment to more than one million people. Since vaccines became available to Costa Rica, there have been almost 10 million vaccines purchased and donated. This sum could protect about 5 million people living in the country. The government confirmed that herd immunity can be achieved when 83% of the population, approximately 4,274,344 million people are fully vaccinated. As of Tuesday, Costa Rica has applied 6,124,455 vaccines. However, on Thursday the health authorities reported 66,989 active covid-19 cases. Of the total 554,604 cases detected since last year, there were 6,895 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.2% death rate, according to the statistics, which can be found on the Health Ministry website.
