By the A.M. Costa Rica staff In Costa Rica, there have been 6,736,978 vaccines against covid-19 applied, according to the Social Security. Approximately 75% of the population or 3,790,500 people have received their first dose. Also, 58% of the population, or 2,922,621 people have completed their two-dose treatment. Plus 23,857 people have received their booster shot. The booster shot is provided to a certain group of adults and children who have already completed their full-dose vaccination. The country has a herd immunity goal of at least 83% of the population, more than 4.2 million fully-vaccinated people in Costa Rica, authorities said. Currently, the vaccination campaign is focused on nationals, residency DIMEX cardholders and immigrants over the age of 12. The campaign also includes undocumented foreigners living in Costa Rica. Vaccines are available in public hospitals, clinics, some universities and commercial centers. But authorities are advising people eligible to get the vaccine to first stop by their local public clinic, known as Ebais, to get information on the vaccination program for that specific area or by calling the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000. Also, the list of clinics or hospitals can be found on the Covid Vaccination Campaign website. Costa Rica has applied a vaccination mandate for all public employees to be fully vaccinated. As of January 8, 2022, full vaccinations will be mandatory for people over the age of 12 to enter any public artistic, cultural, mass event, among others, according to authorities. People must get their ID and Covid pass to be allowed to enter massive events or many public places. The Costa Rica Covid pass is available on the Ministry of Health webpage. According to the ministry, more than 2.3 million people obtained their Covid pass. They were fully vaccinated before Oct. 25. The ministry continues with the process of issuing Covid passes for the rest of the fully vaccinated population. A new Social Security rule requires the following free basic vaccination requirements for Costa Ricans, including the vaccine against covid-19, to inoculate against 14 diseases such as: Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Streptococcus, Pneumoniae, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Rotavirus, Haemophilus, Measles, Rubella, Mumps and Varicella. Plus, all girls over the age of 10 must get the vaccine against Papillomavirus. As of Friday, Costa Rica has imported 7,142,835 vaccines against covid-19. Even though more people in the country have been vaccinated, the virus continues spreading. On Tuesday, the health authorities reported 7,164 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.3% death rate, according to the Health Ministry statistics. The pandemic has killed more than 5 million people worldwide, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University. ------------------ How far along is your country in achieving herd immunity against covid-19?
