The option to get free vaccines against covid-19 for tourists or immigrants who are undocumented (know as no legal resident Dimex) and are living in the country,  was extended this month, Social Security said.

The previous week, the authorities began with a pilot program to inoculate this population, which ended on Thursday. Now, Social Security extended the deadline for people to receive the first dose until Oct. 28.

This extra covid vaccination campaign is aimed at inoculating the population living in the country but who do not have legal immigration status documents, said Leandra Abarca- Gómez, a representative of Social Security.

During the first phase of the campaign, from Oct. 8- 14, medical experts applied 28,845 doses of the vaccine against covid-19. Of these, 17,299 were first doses and 11,546 were second doses.








According to Abarca, the goal of Social Security is to vaccinate as many people as possible against covid-19.

Authorities are requiring for people who qualify to get vaccinated under the extended campaign, must have the following: be a foreigner, do not have a residence document (DIMEX) and be over the age of 18. Those interested should visit the public clinic or hospital nearest their homes and show an ID, such as a passport or ID of the country of origin.

The Social Security staff will be in charge of registering the person in their vaccination campaign database. After having received the first dose, the person will receive a Social Security card indicating the second dose appointment date.

The government confirmed that herd immunity can be achieved when 83% of the population, approximately 4,274,344 million people to be fully vaccinated. As of last week, Costa Rica has applied 5,921,089 vaccines.

As of Friday, authorities reported 74,291 active covid-19 cases. Of the total 551,114 cases detected since last year, there were 6,797 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.2% death rate, according to the statistics, which can be found on the Health Ministry website.

The pandemic has killed more than 4.9 million people worldwide, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
