Tourist visa automatically
extended until July

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Due to an employee of the General Directorate of Migration testing positive for covid-19, the building will be closed to the public until May 18.

Because of the building closure, the Directorate has confirmed that the period of legal permanence authorized for foreign people in the migratory category of Tourism who entered the country after December 17, 2019, is automatically extended until July 17, 2020.

This should be enough bumper for the building to get decontaminated.

The institution informed that the infected employee could have been contaminated because the official was in contact with two foreigners apprehended at
the  Professional Migration Police Center in Heredia Province. Authorities report that 14 people infected with the covid-19 are held there.

Specialists from the Ministry of Health are already giving medical attention and applying the diagnostic tests for covid-19 to the employees who were in contact with the infected patient, the Directorate reported.

In addition to the closure of the central offices, in-depth cleaning of all facilities is being carried out. Since March 17 the offices have been closed for public access, and will continue as so for two more weeks.

According to the institution, more than 80% of the employees are teleworking from home, so the number of officials working in the Directorate facilities was the minimum.

The Directorate provides the following services:

• Requests for legal permanence in the country, they will be received until after May 17.

• Documents or certificates of immigration status that must be requested by email certificacionstatus@migracion.go.cr

• Residence renovations, which are Social Security requirements that must be requested by email email_ccss@migracion.go.cr.
