On the first vote deputies approve the law to regulate telecommuting By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Unanimously, with all 52 votes in favor, the deputies approved in the first of two rounds of the analysis, the Law to Regulate Telecommuting, to generate more employment. Telecommuting, also called virtual work, working from home, mobile work, remote work, or flexible workplace, is a work arrangement in which employees do not commute or travel to a central place of work, such as an office building, warehouse, or store. "The law aims to promote, regulate, and implement teleworking as a tool for additional employment and modernization of public and private companies, through the use of information and communication technologies," said the congress in its statement. All types of businesses or organizations, whether published as institutions, municipalities, ministries, among others, as well as private companies, have to apply this law condition. According to the law, telecommuting is voluntary for both the employee and the employer. There should be a mutual agreement by both parties. The new law does not exempt any party, employee, or company, from applying the rules of the Costa Rican Labor Code. According to Deputy Karine Niño, "this telecommuting project is being used in different companies, with very positive results for the country, so we have given it legal regulation for both employees and employers." According to Deputy Walter Muñoz, with this law, "we continue on the right path to attack unemployment, especially in the rural areas." According to the Stanford University report in 2014, Nicholas Bloom, a professor of economics, teamed up with a China’s travel agency, to test telecommuting jobs. Over nine months, about 250 workers volunteered for the experiment; half were randomly chosen to work at home and half in the office. "At the end of the experiment, employers found that the home-based employees worked more than office workers, 9.5 percent longer, and were 13 percent more productive", said Stanford University in its statement. ----------------------------- Could you perform your current work duties from home?
