surgery performed in a public hospital

Social Security specialists announced the first surgery done in the country to a cancer patient to join the stomach with the intestine.

According to Social Security, the surgery done with the gastroscope method guided by ultrasound through the patient's mouth is known as Gastroenteroanastomosis. The other more traditional surgery option requires opening the body to reach the organs, but that method generally includes increased pain and longer healing times.

The surgery was completed at the Hospital Enrique Baltodano in Liberia*, in the province of Guanacaste, by Dr. Jorge Vargas-Madrigal, "a doctor trained in Italy and who has specialized knowledge to perform special procedures," said Social Security in its statement.

In the case of this patient, a 59-year-old woman, "the growth of the pancreas tumor had blocked the digestive tract" said Social Security. "At the time of her arrival at the hospital, the woman could not swallow, because she had three weeks with a blocked stomach and also she had yellow skin due to the blockage of the gallbladder."

Dr. Vargas-Madrigal utilized an endoscope, through the patient's mouth, then joined the stomach with the intestine to reconnect the digestive tract and reconnect the gallbladder.

A few hours after the surgery, "the patient was able to start drinking fluids and then eat solid food," Social Security said in its statement.

After the success of this surgery done for the first time in the country, Social Security is analyzing the possibility of applying the procedure in cases of patients with cancer, on the cases of with biliary-intestinal obstruction, said Social Security in its statement.

In another case of unusual surgery, on March 28, As A.M. Costa Rica previously reported, the Social Security announced the surgeons at the Calderón Guardia Hospital* in the province of San José, removed a 1.7-kilogram thyroid tumor from a 66-year-old woman. The patient is the mother of 14 children.

The patient's clinical history indicates she suffered from thyroid problems since she was 13 years old and had been seen on multiple occasions in several hospitals of Social Security.

"Because of her fear of surgery, the patient refused treatment until her thyroid tumor increased to such size that her health severely deteriorated," said the Social Security on its statement.

According to the specialist's report, the patient was referred with the diagnosis of giant multinodular goiter that caused discomfort when she swallowed and respiratory distress if she exerted herself. Her condition accelerated her metabolism causing thinness.

"The goiter was finally removed in a seven-hour surgery", said the Social Security. "The patient totally recovered".

According to Dr. Wendy Monge, a specialist in Otolaryngology, this type of case is infrequent. In the case of smaller goiters, the problem can be kept under control with medication.
